The Prospect Database - The Dynasty League Toolkit
Custom Off-Platform Prospect Database to turn your fantasy league into a Dynasty League
Last week I talked about the hub I created for my league. I called it a hub because it brought in data from multiple sources and combined everything in a format that made it easy for my league to be run through the offseason when Yahoo for some reason shuts its fantasy baseball down. That was how it started, but then we realized how much fun it was to not be held back by roster limits or by the ability of Yahoo to add in new players. If Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s little brother gets signed by the Mets, in our league he is added to the database and is now part of our dynasty league ecosystem the same day. We don’t have to wait.
(As of writing this Vladimir Miguel Guerrero is not even on Baseball Reference but he is in my prospect database)
The Layout
The purpose is to give your league a way to record ownership of prospects in a year-round database. It allows for off-season trading, so now you can make bad trades in the wintertime. Most importantly it allows for expanded rosters, you don’t have to have 40 NA slots on the Yahoo roster or be limited by platform settings. Own as many prospects as your league wants to manage.
Prospect List - is a simple spreadsheet. I have compiled all 900 top prospects from MLB Pipeline and added some additional international names and prospects that appear in Fangraphs lists. It allows a league admin to assign prospects to managers.
Prospect Rosters - updates automatically with data from the prospect list.
Prospect Search - used to quickly search for players in the prospect list. You can search by individual player names, by team farm system, or by a subcategory you have created.
The one issue that my league has run into is that players in the farm system are still on waivers and appear to be unowned on the players page in Yahoo. The Quick Search has really helped solve this issue. If you are about to add a player who probably has prospect status, you can quickly look up who owns that player in your league Hub (in my league all players with Rookie Eligibility are considered prospects still). This does not completely solve the problem, but my league has had less issues after adding it. We also use a discord chat for call ups/send downs, so everyone gets to know who owns active MLB rookies.
